The Boundaries of Happiness, Luck, Wealth and Poverty, and Success and Failure as Seen through Existence Ethics

Soyo's Existence Ethics (Existence itself is ethics)

The weight of existence, the difference of a single sheet of paper.

We always divide each other. The rich and the poor, the happy and the unhappy, the successful and the unsuccessful, the talented and the untalented. However, “happiness and unhappiness, wealth and poverty, talent and lack of talent... human existence is such that there is no difference between them, not even the thickness of a single sheet of paper.” We distinguish and compare each other, making those differences thicker, longer, and heavier. But those differences do not inherently exist. We simply believe, imagine, and speak of them as such.

We have turned the gap of a single sheet of paper into a wall, into stairs, with some looking down from above and others looking up from below. But the truth is, all those differences are as thin as a sheet of paper, as light as a handful of dust, and as fleeting as a momentary illusion.

Happiness, luck, and the weight that existence can bear.

We crave happiness. We divide people into the happy and the unhappy, the lucky and the unlucky. But what is happiness? Is it something that can truly be possessed? We believe that we will be happy when certain conditions are met, but happiness is merely the weight that existence can bear. “Is happiness the serene light that your existence can bear, or is it the illusion of success that must be pursued endlessly?”

Luck is no different. We divide the world under the name of luck, believing that some have more opportunities than others. However, that luck is merely a symbol as thin as a sheet of paper; the true difference lies in how one brings it into existence.

Wealth and poverty, the illusion of difference, and the weight of existence.

The wealthy and the poor. We divide the world into two and erect a wall between them. But how sturdy is that wall? Is it a real wall, or an illusion we have imagined? “Wealth and poverty are merely a thin line apart. We turn that difference into a wall, and the world believes that wall cannot be torn down.”

I have seen many people rise from poverty to wealth, and others take the opposite path. That difference was always just an “event.” A person’s decision, a single transaction, a phone call—all of these can change everything in an instant. Wealth is not a matter of material possessions but of attitude toward existence. Poverty is not a matter of deprivation but of confession of existence. Wealth and poverty are defined not by what one has but by what one can endure.

Can we measure the weight of existence?

The world seeks to distinguish between the capable and the incapable. Qualifications, achievements, appearance, ability, eloquence, and talent. But I ask, can the weight of existence truly be measured? “The difference between capability and incapability is as thin as a sheet of paper. It is merely a standard we have created. The depth of existence cannot be measured by that thin sheet of paper.”

The world divides people by education, occupation, appearance, and achievements, but all those standards crumble over time. Time makes everything equal. The talented and the untalented will eventually become a handful of dust. As long as you exist, there is no such thing as talented or untalented. You simply exist.

The ethics of existence, a confession to transcend differences.

We create differences: the happy and the unhappy, the wealthy and the poor, the capable and the incapable. However, my ethics of existence state, “All those differences are as thin as a sheet of paper, as fleeting as a momentary illusion, and we have merely made them thicker.”

We divide and distinguish each other, some feeling superior, others feeling inferior. But none of that is the essence of existence. Existence cannot be divided. Existence cannot be compared. If you are alive, you are already complete.

The equal weight of existence.

We spend our entire lives trying to bridge the gaps. We chase higher positions, more wealth, greater success, and more recognition. But all of that is no thicker than a sheet of paper. “Happiness and unhappiness, wealth and poverty, success and failure… all of that is just a sheet of paper’s thickness. We are the ones who have made that gap long, thick, heavy, and distant.”

"Existence has no weight. Existence simply is. And that is enough. As long as you exist, you are complete in yourself.”
